“So, what are you having?”

Your eyes dart nervously between menu boards adorned with colorful chalk patterns, your voice trembling with trepidation at the bartender’s potential response. You’ve had to squeeze through a crowd of other noisy, boisterous patrons just to claim this prized spot along the bar, and now it’s your time to shine.

“Got anything without alcohol?”

Look, social pressures aside, choosing to go sober, or at least forgo alcohol for a night or a drink or two, does not have to be an anxiety-inducing experience.

But I’ve been there. Early days of sobriety came with plenty of long, awkward pauses, actual blushing (and not boozy flushed face), and stammering.

“Oh, er, um, uhhhh… just water, thanks.”

Being sober, especially newly sober, is hard enough. It’s nearly impossible to escape the social pressures to drink. Not to mention the barrage of advertisements and neon lights glowing with promises of sweet, sweet release from the pains of daily life.

And it all starts with one sip, right?

But many of us have gone down that road and seen the harsh truth.

Alcohol itself is not necessarily inherently bad.
